We know that, when it comes to booking your train tickets online in Greece, the company’s website can be a bit frustrating. Let us guide you through it!

The official website of the Greek train company is tickets.trainose.gr. It can be a bit of a pain to book a ticket because some extremely important sections are not translated into English yet. This illustrated guide is meant to aid you in the process of booking your train ticket online.

At the first screen, select your arrival and departure station, find the train you prefer,  click on the “Seat Selection” button at the top right corner. That will take you to the seat selection page.

At the seat selection page, after you select your desired seats, on the far right you will see a list of all your selected seats and above that a “Terms of Service” button. Click it!

At the TOS page, check the “I accept the terms of service” box and, again at the right corner, click the “Passenger names” button.

On the passenger names page, you should write down the names of all passengers, one at a time in the “όνομα επιβάτη” (which is Greek for passenger’s name) field box, choose the discount group:

  • “ΚΑΝΟΝΙΚΟ” is for full adult price
  • “ΠΑΙΔΙΚΟ” is for children from 4-12 years old
  • “26- / 54+” is for passengers below 26 years old or above 65 years old
  • “ΣΚΥΛΟΙ” is for dogs, except for guide dogs

Make sure to select the correct discount group and afterward click on “Προσθήκη” to add each passenger to the list to the right. Then, again at the far top right corner, click on “Extra services”.

The extra services, as stated, are optional so go ahead and click on “Web ticket payment” at the top right corner of your screen.

You’ve made it to the final screen! Review your purchase at the left of the screen and select your payment method (credit card I suppose). Fill in your credit card details and you are set!

After completing the purchase, you will see all your tickets. Print that screen! The website will even ask you to! Make sure to have your train vouchers printed when you board the train to make things easier for you!

As soon as you book your train tickets you can book the Mid day tour from train station that will start and finish at Kalampaka train station.

By booking our Meteora Train to Train Tour, you can now arrange to pick you up from Kalambaka train station at 11:30, upon your arrival from Athens or Thessaloniki. We will take you on a 5-hours Meteora tour with a local tour leader who will show you the most beautiful spots around Meteora. At the end of the tour, around 16:45 we will drop you off back at the train station, on time for departure with the 17:15 pm train to Athens or to Thessaloniki. See all the monasteries and enter inside 3 of them while still having time to stop at various spots for photo opportunities! Our tour leader will be waiting outside Kalambaka train station holding a signboard with your name written on it to board a brand new VIP Limo minibus for the Meteora tour. For the entire duration of the tour, we provide a 500ml free bottle of water and free Wi-Fi on board the bus.

If you still find booking a train ticket online a difficult task for you, we are here to help you! Book your next train trip to Meteora with us and let us worry about everything! We will book you all the tickets needed, the hotel in Meteora and activities here.

That’s it! Welcome to Greece!

    Dear Tom,
Thank you for your kind words. The train company hasn’t updated the availability yet. We think they will update in March someday.Usually you can book online one month prior departure date. Also there is a cutoff 48 hours prior departure.
    Best regards

Hi Tom Grundy,
I just booked my tickets online from Athens to Kalambaka on 6 April.
So, you should be able to book your tickets online for Athens to Thessaloniki on April 5th

Dear Alexandros
Thanks for your helpful instructions to book the train tickets. Just an update that they have done away with the “Extra Services” option and gone on to “Webticket Payment”.

I am looking at taking the Athens to Thessaloniki train on 9th April. Is it worth the extra few 6 euros to go first class?

    Dear Ian,

Yes, it is well worth getting a first class seat, especially given the small cost difference.

I tried booking a ticket from Athens to Kalambaka today (2/25/2018) for March 13,2018. But when I entered the date or any other date than today , there was an error message (Nan.Nan.Nan) at the date selection.
thanks

hi I don’t know if you can help me but its worth asking!
I purchased a ticket Athens to Thessaloniki travelling on Tuesday 3rd April on the Trainose web site everything went well and they sent confirmation to my email but the ticket has disappeared and I can find no way of getting it back!
I have the seat number 132 65 and the train time 10.18 and payment has been taken from my account 22 80 euros.
what is my best way of sorting this I cant find an email address for Trainose and don’t want to phone from the UK!!
Should I visit their Athens office when I arrive on 2nd April? I would be very grateful for any advice you can give .
Thanks

    Hi!

Tickets don’t just disappear! Check out your deleted folder; it might still be there. You can contact with the train company by filling out this form http://www.trainose.gr/en/complaints/ and sort it out.

Hello!
Thanks for the guide. When Im up to the seat selection nothing is showing! I can’t select any seats and it won’t take me to the next page which is “Terms of service.” Im trying to book roundtrip tickets from Larissa to Kalambaka

    Dear Terence,

Please let me know the date that you want to travel.

Also, have in mind that the train station in Athens is named “Larissis Station”. But Larisa is a city in central Greece. For online train tickets, you should search by the destination name, not the name of the train station. I am saying that because many people get confused, they want to travel from Athens “Larissis Station” and they insert as departure or arrival point the Larisa city which is wrong.

    Hi Nikki,

The reason you don’t see any trains on May 1st is because the railway company hasn’t opened up the dates for booking yet. Give it some time and eventually they will become available.

A very clear explanation, thank you. I have one question. We are going to travel from Athens to Kalambaka, stay there for 2 days and then travel from Kalambaka to Thessaloniki. I have visited the website and have no problem to book the train from Athens to Kalambaka. However, for the train from Kalambaka to Thessaloniki, the trip finder shows there is a direct train no. 590 depart at 8:19am but I can’t select that train and it is dimmed. The only train that I can select is train no. 855+58, but that train stops at Palaeofarsalos. I have changed the date, but the results are the same.

I just want to know does the direct train from Kalambaka to Thessaloniki exist? It is dimmed at the website, does it mean that I can’t book tickets of this train online? Thank you for your help.

Best regards,
K.K. Leung

      Reply

      Hello,

The reason why you see the train trips dimmed is because there aren’t any numbered seats on them, and because of that online booking is not supported. You simply buy the train tickets at the station, board the train and sit wherever you want.

Hi

Brilliant guide, I’ve managed to book a train for my travels already.
However I’m having an issue trying to book a train from Kalambaka to Athens.

The train I’m looking at has 2 legs. But for the first let there is no seating option available it just shows “–” Does this mean you don’t need to reserve any seats or is the train just full?

Thanks

I am trying to book a train from Thessaloniki to Litichoro for 6/28/18. I am not able to book one. It is not showing any seat selections. The trips are not grayed out either because I can select them. Is it because the seats are all booked or because they are not available yet or maybe I need to buy the tickets at the train station on the date of travel? I tried from Thessaloniki to Larissa and the seat map comes up and I would be able to purchase a ticket but I prefer to go to Litichoro. There are more trains and better times to Litichoro.

Hi, I wonder if you could help?

I am trying to travel from Thessaloniki to Larissa and return later on in the month. Using the mobile app or the troublesome website, I find that some trains allow me to reserve a seat, some do not offer it (depending on the time of the day the train is).

I know I need to get a certain train to reach the airport in time for my return flight but I am concerned that if I can’t pre-book it or reserve a seat, that I will not be able to get a ticket at the station? Any help would be much appreciated.

Hi there! If you cannot reserve a specific seat then that means that the train doesn’t offer numbered seating. This means that you simply board it and site wherever you want.

Trying to get there from Thessaloniki. Thessaloniki – Kalambaka one way is the fare that I will be needing, but the booking section doesn’t allow me to purchase this online ticket because it wont show seats to be reserved; the page displays —blank— under A and B seats. So if that is the reason for online sales refusal how do I get my ticket then? I am not going to get a different one with partial seat reservation and have a long 2hr transfer wait in Palaeofarsalos because I need that ticket, then I’ll pass. It doesn’t look like there is a lot to do there when I see images in Googlemaps. What makes this service 591/886 different from the other ones?
So is it better to get this 16:17 fare to Kalambaka at the Salonika railway station and will it be the same price as on the booking section (€15,20)? Or will it be more, like the 19/25 euro prices I’ve seen? Thank you.

The reason you cannot reserve tickets on some trains is because they do not offer numbered seats. This means that, you go at the station on the day of your trip, buy your tickets and sit wherever you wish!

Hello, we would like to go take our car on the train from Athens to Thessaloni end of August an dreturn end of September. It seems that we can only book tickets one month prior. How can we be sure to get a space for the car and ourselves on the train on the preferred dates. Do we have to go directly to the train station in Athens.

Hi,
I have just booked 3 tickets from Athens to Kalambaka a few minutes ago through the website. I’ve gone through all the steps till the payment page. After I inserted authorization code I got through SMS from my bank, the page was error and the booking code didn’t show up. Then I got an SMS from my bank that said the transaction was successful and my credit card has been charged. Is there any way I can get the booking code since I have not received any booking confirmation email up until now?

I’m arriving in Greece on 21 May and going to Meteora on 3/6 (and on to Thessaloniki 4/6). As of today, the website is only doing reservations one week in advance. I won’t be able to print an only ticket once I’m in Greece. Am I doing something wrong? Only one week advance reservation is very inconvenient. Any suggestions?

Thank you for your helpful attempt to guide potential visitors doing something normally as simple as buying a train ticket.
It’s hard to believe that a country (that I lived in for 10 years) that’s very dependent on tourism doesn’t seem to want tourists to travel there. I am coming from New Zealand and it’s very stressful not knowing whether I need to be checking day and night to see if trains are going to run or not. I foolishly booked accommodation and a tour, and know don’t know if I’ll be able to get there.
