Athens to Meteora: 1-Day Bus Tour Alternative for Train (2025)

Athens to Meteora: 1-Day Bus Tour Alternative for Train (2025)

Blog thumbnail

Rail links between Athens and Meteora have been out of service since the twin storms Daniel and Elias tore through Thessaly in September 2023, washing away tracks and bridges across the entire region. The Greek prime minister, Kyriakos Mitsotakis, has recently vowed to upgrade the country’s railways. A few days ago, the Greek Ministry of Infrastructure signed restoration contracts worth €899 million. Still, officials say the work will span “several more years” before direct trains operate again.

Below, we give a heads-up on the issue and provide the best alternative to train options for a quick 1-day bus tour from Athens to Meteora.

Is the Athens-Meteora train running in 2025?

As of May 2025, no direct train service connects Athens to Meteora. While the central Athens–Thessaloniki route resumed in December 2023, the critical 90-km segment from Palaiofarsalos to Kalambaka and Meteora remains closed. In late April 2025, the Infrastructure Ministry approved a package for restoring and flood-proofing the Palaiofarsalos–Kalambaka line. The expected completion timeline spans around 15 months from the beginning of construction; however, local rail engineers and media suggest that passenger services are unlikely to resume before mid-2026. Meanwhile, Hellenic Train provides a limited bus service, substituting for the train between Palaiofarsalos and Kalambaka, increasing the usual travel time from Athens to Meteora by four to six hours and requiring two transfers.

Great Meteoron Monastery:

Athens to Meteora 1-day bus tour

(Every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday)

The Holy Monastery of Great Meteoron, the largest and oldest of the Meteora monasteries, is situated atop the highest rock pillar. It became a central hub of Orthodox Christianity, founded in the 14th century by Saint Athanasios the Meteorite. The monastery features a Katholikon adorned with 16th-century frescoes and a museum showcasing manuscripts and liturgical artifacts that reflect the region’s rich spiritual heritage. Accessible via carved steps, Great Meteoron remains a popular destination for pilgrims and visitors seeking a connection to history, faith, and the stunning natural surroundings of Meteora.

Varlaam Monastery:

(Except Fridays)

The Holy Monastery of Varlaam, the second-largest in Meteora, was founded in the early 16th century on a rock previously inhabited by the ascetic monk Varlaam in the 14th century. Established by brothers Theophanes and Nektarios Apsarades, the monastery features the Katholikon, dedicated to All Saints, which showcases intricate frescoes by Cretan artist Frangos Katelanos from 1548. A preserved wooden pulley system, once used to lift supplies and monks, highlights the monks’ ingenuity. Today, Varlaam offers spiritual inspiration and stunning views, with a small museum displaying religious artifacts and historical documents. It is a significant site for those interested in Orthodox heritage and monastic life.

Roussanou Monastery:

Roussanou-monastery

(Except Wednesdays)

Nestled gracefully atop a narrow rock pinnacle, the Monastery of Roussanou is truly one of Meteora’s most breathtaking monastic gems! Founded in the late 14th century and beautifully transformed in the 16th century by the devoted monks Maximos and Ioasaph, this monastery is dedicated to the Transfiguration of Christ. Its breathtaking Katholikon, adorned with vibrant frescoes and rich iconographic symbols, offers a glimpse into the heartfelt devotion of the community. Now a welcoming convent, Roussanou is home to a lovely group of Orthodox nuns who embody the spirit of prayer and hospitality. Accessible via a charming bridge and a short ascent, it’s one of the most visited monasteries, inviting everyone to explore its beauty.

Agios Stefanos Monastery:

Saint-Stephen-monastery

(Except Mondays)

Agios Stefanos, or St. Stephen’s Monastery, is a remarkable site among the Meteora monasteries, easily accessible via a charming stone bridge. Founded in the 14th century and serving as a convent since the 1960s, it features two beautiful churches: a 16th-century chapel dedicated to St. Stephen and a newer cathedral for St. Charalambos, housing his relic. Despite challenges from World War II and the Greek Civil War, the monastery has been restored. It offers lush gardens, warm hospitality, and a museum filled with icons and ecclesiastical treasures, all set against breathtaking views of the Plain of Thessaly and the Pindus Mountains, providing a serene spiritual experience.

The Hermit Caves of Badovas:

(Daily)

The Hermit Caves of Badovas, nestled beneath Meteora’s cliffs, offer a glimpse into the region’s early monastic life, with ascetic monks inhabiting them as early as the 11th century. Naturally carved into the rock, these caves housed hermits who built wooden huts and ladders to seek solitude and spiritual elevation, living a life of simplicity, self-denial, and continuous prayer reflective of hesychastic monasticism. Today, visible from footpaths and tours, the caves stand as a testament to the dedication of early Christian ascetics and remind visitors of the spiritual quest that drew them to Meteora’s heights.

Depending on the day, at least one of the monasteries closes between Monday and Friday. For more information, you can check the updated Opening Hours and Days of the Meteora Monasteries.

What to Wear – Monastery Dress Code

Here are the dress code guidelines: Women should wear long skirts or dresses that cover the knees and tops that cover the shoulders. Trousers, even if modest, are generally not accepted. Some monasteries may provide wrap-around skirts at the entrance if needed.

Men should wear long trousers and shirts with sleeves that cover the shoulders. Sleeveless tops and shorts above the knee are not permitted. • Be mindful of photography restrictions inside the monasteries. Some areas may prohibit photography to preserve the sanctity and condition of religious artifacts.
  • Maintain a respectful demeanor, keeping noise to a minimum and refraining from disruptive behavior.

Varlaam monastery, with 170 steps and a stunning 16th-century chapel, is our second option and is not visited on Fridays. Roussanou, also with 170 steps and a short downhill walk, is our third choice, except on Wednesdays. Great Meteoron has over 300 steps, making it more strenuous, especially in the summer.
