If you think Meteora is beautiful by day, wait until you see it in the golden light of sunset. This 3.5-hour Afternoon Meteora Off-Road Buggy Adventure takes you on a 50 km circle route through wildlife refuge dirt roads, forests, creeks and hidden monuments, ending at a quiet viewpoint just as the sun sets behind the rock pillars.
Your experience begins at our base in Kastraki, where you’ll meet your guide, gear up with safety equipment and receive a short but detailed briefing on how to handle your CF MOTO SxS buggy. Once everyone feels comfortable, you set off towards the rocky area around Ypapanti, leaving the busy roads and buses behind.
From there, the asphalt disappears and the off-road fun begins: you follow your guide along dirt roads through a wildlife refuge, climbing gently towards Vlachava village. The views open up as you gain height, with the Meteora rocks and the valley spreading out below you in the soft afternoon light.
Near Vlachava, you turn onto smaller tracks leading to one of the hidden spiritual treasures of the area: the 14th-century cave monastery of Palaiopanagia, carved into the cavity of an impressive rock formation. You park the buggies and take a short hike through oak forest and creeks to reach the site. Here you’ll have time to explore the rock-cut spaces, imagine the life of the hermit monks who once lived here, and enjoy the silence of the forest around you.
Back in the buggies, the route continues towards the Ionas river, where you’ll visit the old stone arch bridge of Psyras – a beautiful relic of traditional stone architecture hidden in the landscape. It’s an ideal spot for photos and a quiet break by the water.
As the sun starts to dip, you drive to a secluded sunset viewpoint overlooking Meteora. Far from the main road and the popular crowded spots, you’ll enjoy unobstructed panoramic views of the rock pillars glowing in the evening light. It’s the perfect way to close the day before, following your guide back to the base.
This is a tour, not a race. The pace is relaxed, with time for photos, short walks, and explanations. It’s designed for travelers who want to experience Meteora in a different way: off-road, in golden light, close to natur,e and far from the crowds.
