Tour Details

The afternoon Hiking Tour of Meteora’s hermit Caves hikes up the rock of Aghio Pnevma (Holy Spirit), which is located in the middle of the valley that extends from the village of Kastraki towards the vast rock complex of Meteora.

The 3 hrs hiking Meteora’s hermit caves will guide you on the trails near the village of Kastraki. On top, a chapel made inside a cave and dedicated to Holy Spirit was erected by the very first hermit of Meteora. A hermit-monk named Varnavas lived there in the 10th century. So, one could say that this rock became the birthplace of the monastic community of Meteora. It’s the rock where all began more than a thousand years ago.

Walk in the footsteps of those first hermit monks of Meteora; see the caves where those faithful people chose to live centuries ago. Learn all the stories and the legends through the narrative of our guides. This afternoon hiking starts from the central square of Kastraki, on the foothills of Aghio Pnevma rock. It guides on top of the rock pillar of Agio Pnevma, and then you get the chance to visit the prison cave of the monks, located on the northern side of Aghio Pnevma. The hike will then pass below the cave of St. George and it will finish back at the central square of the Kastraki village.

At the end, we will take you to one of the best spots to see the sunset at Meteora and gave at the magnificent views.

We cannot pick up clients from AirBNBs for our tours. If you are staying in Kalampaka then you can come by our offices here to start the tour. If you are staying in Kastraki then you can meet us at our offices there.

Trikala is a city about 21km away from Kalampaka. Because of that, we do not offer pick up from there. You can catch the local bus to Kalampaka, which runs regularly and come by our offices here to start the tour.

First of all, keep in mind that, since every monastery closes on some days of the week, we do not visit the same monasteries every day. The monasteries we usually visit though are the following: Meteora Half-day Tour: Great Meteoron, Varlamm and Rousssanou Sunset Sunset Tour: St. Stephen Meteora Hiking Tour: Great Meteoron, Ypapanti

In case of bad weather the tour will be cancelled and you will get a full refund.

The pick-up time for all our tours is the same as the meeting time, indicated on your vouchers and our website. Please note that there may be a slight difference of 5-10 minutes between that time and the actual pick up time, depending on the number of pickups we have scheduled. Please be ready 10 minutes prior to your trip in order to facilitate that.

You can make a booking with us literally at the last minute! Just keep in mind that there may be no seats left on the tour if you do that! We recommend booking at least one week in advance, in order to have the best chances of finding availability.

We have split our tours tom morning and afternoon ones. Furthermore, all our tours visit different places at Meteora. This way, you can combine any morning tour with any afternoon tour you wish! All all-time-classic combination is the Meteora Hiking Tour in the morning and the Meteora Sunset Tour in the afternoon.

Darren
Darren Incredible hike of Meteora’s caves
My girlfriend and I who have minimal hiking experience did the “Hiking Meteora’s Caves” which was the highlight of our stay in Meteora. Our guide Chris, a local of Meteora, was extremely knowledgeable of the area and the history of the monasteries and hermit caves. Throughout the whole trip he explained to us the significance of what we were seeing and drew our attention old monasteries, wild herbs, and other things we would not have noticed otherwise. Although we are both novice hikers, and the hike itself is definitely challenging at times, we always felt safe and well looked after during the hike. Chris even brought us extra water and snack bars. There were amazing photo opportunities throughout the hike that we would not have been able to find by ourselves, and at the end we had climbed to the top of the rock of the Holy Spirit where the view of the area was absolutely spectacular. I highly recommend doing this hike if you visit Meteora.

I did 4 tours with Visit Meteora...all of them were great...due to the covid situation and tourist numbers being down I was the only person on 3 of the tours...despite this they still run the tours which was great! 👍🏼 I did the hiking tour, sunset tour, scramble tour & mountain biking tour...the guides on all of the tours were great, arrived on time, were friendly and provided a lot of information. I’d definitely recommend booking with them!

We had a wonderful time on the tours with Visit Meteora. The hotel and restaurant selections were fantastic (we had the 3 day package). The tour guides were knowledgeable and personable. We also did the hiking tour and the cave tour, both of which were what I would consider intermediate difficulty, so be prepared for some rugged terrain! It was exactly what we were looking for! We would HIGHLY recommend Visit Meteora !

5 months ago We did the cave tour with local hike guide, Costas. It was an amazing experience! He brought us to two caves, located on top of one of the rocks in the meteora and told us the history of the rocks and the monesteries build on them. Besides that, Costas is a very funny and interesting person who is very passionate about hiking, climbing and mountaineering. His jokes and knowledge about the area made the trip up less difficult 😉

We did 2 tours with Visit Meteor, the Hiking Meteoras' Caves and Half Day Tour of Meteora. The hiking one was fantastic. It's their second most adventurous (behind the scrambling tour that I'll do next time) and it was definitely for adventurous minded people. Highly recommend! Our tour guide was a little hard to understand but very informative and very helpful. The views were fantastic. The Half Day Tour was really interesting too. I'm not one for much religion but the history of the monasteries was great to hear about and after hiking a mountain, getting driven up in a really nice air conditioned mini bus with free water and wifi with lots of information was great too.

We did 2 tours with Visit Meteora ("hiking meteora's caves" and a half day monastery tour). Both of them were wonderful! The hike was really good as it was beautiful the whole way and also exciting. We hiked up to the top of one of the rocks and visited a cave and also a "monk's jail". The monastery tour was by bus with some walking and a visit to 3 separate monastries which is also a must do in meteora! Both times the group experiences were small which I enjoyed because it was more comfortable
