How to Add It to Your Meteora Itinerary

Monastery of Roussanou Meteora: History, Views & Visitor Guide

The Monastery of Roussanou, or Agia Varvara in Greek, is a stunning historical site in Meteora, Greece, dating back to the 14th century. Roussanou was believed to have been the name of the first hermit-monk who settled on the rock during that time. This unique monastery is essentially one single structure that occupies the entire cliff surface, giving the impression that it was intricately carved from the rock itself. Part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Meteora, this historic convent is known for its elegant architecture, beautiful frescoes, panoramic views, and peaceful atmosphere.

In the 16th century, the Monastery was expanded across three primary levels, enhancing the available space for its inhabitants. Its main cathedral, established at the end of the 16th century, was beautifully decorated thirty years later by a talented monk-artisan who resided in the monastery.

Unlike other monasteries perched upon towering rocks, the Monastery of Saint Barbara is situated at a lower elevation, making it more accessible to visitors. Initially founded by monks, the monastery suffered significant damage during World War II. In a remarkable transformation, it became a convent in 1988 and currently houses more than 15 sister nuns who create a warm and inviting atmosphere.

The nuns devoted the old Monastery of Roussanou to Saint Barbara when they established their convent there.

Don’t miss this chance for a great photo opportunity! The stunning wall paintings of the Catholicon were created in 1560, during the time when the priest-monk Arsenios served as the abbot of the monastery. The artist, whose identity remains unknown, appears to have been quite skilled and adeptly followed the style of the Cretan School.

Local Expert Tips

Best time to avoid crowds

Visit early in the morning or later in the afternoon. Roussanou is one of the most photographed monasteries in Meteora and is very popular with organized tours, so midday can feel crowded, especially in high season.

Best nearby monastery to combine with Roussanou

Combine Roussanou with Agios Nikolaos Anapafsas Monastery. They are close along the Meteora route and work well together if you want a scenic, manageable visit without adding too many long stair climbs.

Photography tip

Roussanou is especially beautiful from the nearby panoramic viewpoints, where you can capture the monastery sitting elegantly on its narrow rock pillar. It is also one of the best Meteora monasteries for sunset-area photography, even if you do not enter the monastery itself at that time.

Parking / access tip

Parking near Roussanou is limited and can fill quickly. From the road, access involves steps and a short bridge leading to the monastery, so comfortable shoes are recommended. The climb is not among the longest in Meteora, but it can feel demanding in hot weather.
