Archaeological Sites and Museums

It’s a historic 11th-century church located in the heart of Kalambaka. Built over the ruins of an ancient pagan temple, this church combines early Christian, Byzantine, and post-Byzantine elements, with original marble columns, frescoes dating back to the 12th century, and remarkable architectural layers.

 It’s one of the oldest continuously active churches in Thessaly and a must-see for lovers of Byzantine art and sacred history.

While the church itself is a living monument, there’s a small but significant Byzantine & Post-Byzantine Collection Museum next door, located in the Old School of Kalambaka. It features:

• Ecclesiastical artifacts

• 14th–19th century icons

• Rare manuscripts and priestly garments

• Wooden temple screens (iconostases)

Small entry fee applies. Open year-round, with adjusted hours in winter.

Theopetra Cave is one of Europe’s most important prehistoric sites, located just 6 km from Kalambaka. It shows continuous human presence from 130,000 BC to 3,000 BC — a timeline covering Neanderthals, early Homo sapiens, and Neolithic farming societies.
