History of Athens

Athens is one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world, with evidence of human presence dating back to around 11,000 BC. The city developed into an important center of the Mycenaean civilization during the Bronze Age, with the Acropolis serving as a fortified stronghold.

By the 6th century BC, Athens began to evolve into a powerful city-state. Reforms introduced by Solon and later Cleisthenes helped establish what is widely considered the first system of democracy in history.

During the Golden Age of Athens in the 5th century BC, the city flourished culturally and politically. Great philosophers such as Socrates, Plato, and Aristotle shaped Western philosophy, while monumental structures like the Parthenon were built on the Acropolis.

Athens later became part of the Roman Empire, followed by the Byzantine and Ottoman periods, before eventually becoming the capital of the modern Greek state in 1834.

Today, Athens remains a city where ancient history and modern life coexist, offering visitors the chance to explore some of the most important archaeological sites in the world.

Athens is also the main gateway for travelers visiting the spectacular monasteries of Meteora, one of Greece’s most unique UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
