The ancient city of Byzantium Byzantium or Byzantion was an ancient Greek colony founded in 667 BC by Dorian colonists who came from Megara, a city-state near Athens. The city of Byzantium, nowadays the Turkish city of Istanbul, took the name from the founder and leader of the expedition Byzas, son of Megara’s’ King Nisos.
